Help Mitigate Risk
Protection Across Your Property
Did you know that arc fault circuit interruptors (AFCI) were only required in the Canadian electrical code in 2002? Arc faults are created when an unintended electrical current flows through an unplanned path, creating excessive heat that can cause fires in the home. Meanwhile, ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) have also similarly only been required in homes and buildings in the last 20 years. Ground faults are electric paths that have found a way to ground but in an unintended path. GFCIs are particularly important to help prevent electrocution and are typically installed where electrical circuits have a chance of coming into contact with water.
Both arc and ground fault receptacles help protect other devices along the electrical circuit that are downstream of it. If your home is 25 years or older, do you know if you are protected?
Whether you’re renovating your home, upgrading your service panel, or just checking that your AFCIs and GFCIs are keeping you protected, Belleville Electric is here for you! Have a question about arc or ground fault protection? Talk to us today and let us know how we can help!
What are AFCIs and GFCIs?
An arc fault interrupter is a circuit breaker that detects electrical arcs that could potentially be dangerous. When this happens, it disconnects power before a fire can start. A ground fault circuit interrupter has a similar function, but is particularly important to prevent electrocution. Typically, they are installed in places where circuits have a chance of coming into contact with water, such as kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, garages, and more.
Common causes of ground faults include:
Water leaking into an electrical box
Worn or damaged insulated wires
Damaged appliances without proper insulation
Common causes of arc faults include:
Damaged or punctured wires
Heat, humidity, and voltage stress
Bent, brittle, or aged cords
