Find Peace of Mind

Own an older home in Calgary?

About 50 years ago, aluminum was the go-to material when it came to wiring homes at the time. Once considered a safe and inexpensive alternative to copper, it’s been discovered that the metal has its fair share of issues. Being a softer metal, for example, it is prone to losing its shape due to repeated temperature changes. If the wiring becomes loose, it can cause arcing and becomes a fire hazard. From thermal sensitivity to rate of deterioration, there are many reasons why copper is a the better alternative.

Experts warn that electrical connections in a house with pre-1972 aluminum wire is 55x more likely to reach fire hazard conditions than with copper.

Although aluminum wiring hasn’t been used in homes for several decades, the material was never recalled or made illegal in Alberta, which means that many older homes may still contain aluminum wiring unless the home has been rewired. While it is recommended that you remove as much aluminum wiring as possible in your home, this is not always a practical solution unless you are doing major renovations in your home. Have questions about how aluminum wiring affects your home? Belleville Electric is here to help!
